Department Of Periodontology And Implantology
Over the last four years , Indira Gandhi Institute Of Dental Sciences, recognized by the Dental Council Of India , has joined others around the state and nation to provide services for the most in need population, without access to adequate dental care. The institution has a well equipped Department Of Periodontics with efficient, dedicated and highly qualified teaching faculty. The Department is headed by Prof. Dr. Rezy Cheru, MDS, Principal Of the Institution.We have other eminent faculties as Prof.Dr.Noorudeen AM, BSc, MDS, Senior Lecturer Dr. Mohammed Shereef MDS, Senior Lecturer Dr. Anie Mary Paul MDS, Lecturer Dr. Anoop Jolly BDS. The Department has 4 highly competent and dedicated dental auxiliaries that include 3 Dental Hygienists and 1 Chair side assistant. Staffs in the department are organized, creative, and enthusiastic and dedicated to the profession.

Department had 17 automatic dental chairs and 15 ultrasonic scaling units. A separate full fledged minor surgery room for periodontal and implant surgeries. The department does show a sound ability to maintain quality, safety and infection control standards with a fully equipped sterilization unit. Department holds hufriedy curettes and all the surgical and non surgical instruments, Electrosurgery unit and Nobel Biocare Implant surgery kit with 10 implants.
The Clinicians handle all the cases related to periodontium. Non surgical cases like Supragingival Scaling ,Root planning and Splinting, Coronoplatsy and Surgical cases like Curettage, Full mouth flap surgeries, Gingivectomy, Frenectomy, Operculectomy, Peridontal abcess drainage, Root resection, Hemisection, Bicuspidation, Regenerative procedures like Guided Tissue Regeneration, Guided bone regeneration and various aesthetic and mucogingival surgeries like Depigmentation, Crownlengthening, Vestibuloplasty and soft tissue grafts are being performed in the department. Medically compromised patients are also being managed in the department. The clinicians emphasis mainly on patient education and motivation, regular recall and review visits, reinforcing oral hygiene instructions and various preventive periodontic programmes are carried out.
Department faculty meetings are being conducted on a regular basis, the needs and grievances are being sorted out
As far the academic version is concerned The Department has effectively implemented quality education and maintained student interest and provided an interactive atmosphere. Regular seminars and discussions are conducted regarding each topic. Manages class rooms and lesson plans are being followed. Students are being guided to perform perfect infection control standards, chair positioning, and basic treatment procedures like scaling based on patient need. They are instructed to keep patient interest, educate and give them proper oral hygiene instructions and brushing techniques before leaving the department. Strict discipline and decorum is being maintained. Regular monthly tests and end posting exams are being conducted.
Programmes
The Department Of Periodontics along with Preventive & Community Dentistry Department has conducted various dental camps in rural areas and orphanages to extend the service to the population without adequate access to dental care. Also have conducted Oral Hygiene Day in the loving memory Of Dr ShankWalker. Various Competitions like essay writing, Poster presentation and elocution were conducted and the prizes will be distributed during the college day.
To improve the reasoning ability the students are being guided for various research projects and creative works. A study was conducted comparing the periodontal status among smokers and non smokers in and around Nellikuzhy.The article was published in the college magazine by the Department faculties.
Achievments
Students are being motivated and guided to participate in various paper presentations and poster competitions and a 3rd BDS student Mr. R. Venkitachalam scored 1st prize for poster competition in state level.
The department is team oriented and demonstrates the highest respect and professionalism for the other staff members and shows enthusiasm for student development. Together we achieve more.
