The department of Conservative Dentistry with a state of art is headed by Professor Dr. Romel joseph with Dr. Dinesh Kamath .G., Dr.. Robin James Pellissery and Dr. Meera Gopalakrishnan as Readers & Dr. Abey .V. Eapen and Dr. Frency Joseph as Senior lecturers & Dr. Usha Narayanan , Dr. Tom Baby. T, Dr. Sruthi Anna Jacob & Dr.. Santhini Ramachandran as lecturers
In the clinical section, we have 17 electrically operated dental chairs with airoter & micro motor attachment .we have all equipment & instruments specified by the dental council of India .
In our department, from simple restorative procedures using zinc oxide eugenol , silver amalgam , composites ,& glass ionomer cements to modern endodontic procedures using rotary instruments are carried out. Surgical endodontic procedures which include root end resection & filling are done under asepsis & personal protective care in the preclinical section. We have a seperate phantom head lab with thirty ( 30 ) units with modules of airotor , micro motor & 3 – way syringe . We provide typhodont base with ivory teeth to students.
Lecture & practical classes are conducted for first & second year B .D .S students. The demonstrations are given to handle various restorative materials and cavity preparations on plaster models & on phantom head . Regular lecture classes are also taken for third year B.D.S students.
In the clinical section third year B.D.S students are trained in patient management skills including a detailed case history taking, diagnosis, investigations and treatment planning. Procedures like restorations with zinc oxide eugenol, zinc poly carboxylate, silver amalgam, composites and glass ionomer cements are carried out by the students under guidance. Examinations are conducted after each postings.
The practical examinations on typhodont teeth were conducted to assess internal marks for second year B.D.S students. A total of four internal examinations were conducted and an average of these marks were sent to the university.
University practical examinations for the subject of dental materials are conducted for 2nd year B.D.S students along with the department of Prosthodontics.
University practical examinations for the subject of pre clinical conservative dentistry are conducted for 2nd year B.D.S students in the month of March 2011.
